TENNIS: Cyclones to take on Big 12 giants
April 5, 2007
The ISU tennis team is still searching for its first Big 12 win of the season.
Halfway through the rigorous conference schedule, the Cyclones (5-7, 0-6) have two more chances to get that win on their home court before closing the season out on the road.
Oklahoma and No. 52 Oklahoma State come to Ames this weekend as the final two opponents in a four-match home stand for Iowa State. These will be the final two matches played in Ames for the three Cyclone seniors.
“We’re playing for the seniors this weekend,” said coach Michele Conlon. “I know they’re going to come out really strong. Eve [Soriano] gave us a lot of momentum with the way she won her match [against Kansas State].”
Winning for the seniors won’t be an easy task since Iowa State’s first opponent, Oklahoma (6-9, 3-3), returns five of six players from last year’s team. The Sooners won last year by a count of 7-0 and own a 30-1 series edge over Iowa State. They are also coming off of a 4-3 win against Kansas State, who in turn beat the Cyclones 5-2 Wednesday.
Oklahoma State (12-5, 4-2) is ranked No. 52 nationally and won its last match – again, against Kansas State – 6-1. The Cowgirls are the fourth ranked opponent the Cyclones have faced so far this season and also bring the current Big 12 Player of the Week to Ames. Senior Lauren Simmons earned the honor with several comeback victories against ranked opponents last week, while going 3-0 in singles play.
Iowa State hopes to bounce back after struggling against Kansas State earlier this week. The match was rescheduled after being canceled because of inclement weather in early March. After being swept uncharacteristically in doubles, the Cyclones were unable to climb out of the early hole, despite outstanding individual efforts by freshman Alyssa Palen and senior Eve Soriano.
“Our doubles, for whatever reason, were not as close as they have been,” Conlon said. “I have faith in our doubles, we just didn’t quite have the pizzazz that we usually do. I think the singles went well, Eve [Soriano] really played a great match. Alyssa [Palen] is playing really well again today, just some very close matches.”
Palen has found success in her last two Big 12 matches and pushed her individual season record to 9-6 while playing in the No. 4 slot. While Palen handled her foe in straight sets, Soriano faced a grueling three-set match before finally putting away her Wildcat opponent 14-12 in the final tie-breaker set.
