Video evidence may lead to arrest in car vandalism

The weekend of Feb. 16 was an expensive one for many students and residents whose cars were parked in the vicinity of the 2100 block of Gable Lane, and the 200 blocks of Gray and Ash avenues.

Ames Police Cmdr. Jim Robinson said Tuesday there were upward of 30 vehicles that had been vandalized. The extensive damage ranged from slashed tires, broken front and rear windshields and dents from where the vandals had jumped on the cars.

“We have a few leads that we are following up on,” Robinson said. “At this point, it is an active investigation.” However, he also said he anticipated arrests being made in the near future.

“It’s senseless for someone to go out and vandalize vehicles,” Robinson said.

Whitney Weeks, sophomore in pre-med, was one of the unfortunate people to wake to a damaged vehicle Sunday morning, and agreed that the crimes were senseless.

“I can’t stand people that will mess with people’s cars like that,” Weeks said. “There is usually no motive behind it – just kids being drunk.”

Weeks was home at the time of the incident, and woke up to a car alarm during the night.

“I sleep right next to the window where you can see my car from the inside,” Weeks said. “I was too out of it to even know where the noise was coming from and if it was even my car.”

It wasn’t until the next morning when Weeks, along with his girlfriend Kelsey Walker, sophomore in apparel merchandise, design and production, discovered the damage.

“The police came in the morning and took pictures of the damage, and got the video feed from our camera showing the guy slamming his foot through my car. I had it towed the next day because two of the tires were slashed,” Weeks said. “The tires alone cost $250.”

Weeks is a member of AAA and avoided further towing expenses, but the estimate for his front and back windshields came back at $1,400.

The only consolation to be had is that Weeks’ parking place happened to be next to one of the four security feeds for his building, and the entire act was captured on camera.

“One of the guys tried kicking in one of the windows of a car parked right next to mine, but he was too drunk and it was too slippery for him to get on top,” Weeks said. “His tires got slashed, as well as three other cars in our parking lot.”

When asked what he would like to say to the vandals, Weeks’ answer was short and to the point.

“Personally, I would like to shove my foot – just like he did to my car – right in where the sun don’t shine,” Weeks said.
