Uniforms honor ’77 bowl team
March 6, 2007
Another twist has been given to next season’s Iowa State-Iowa football game as the Cyclones will pay homage to a former team by wearing throwback jerseys.
Iowa State will honor its 1977 team that went to the Peach Bowl, the first ever bowl game for the Cyclone program.
The 2007 Cyclones will celebrate the 30th anniversary of that season when they wear exact replicas of the ’77 jerseys on Sept. 15 when Iowa visits Jack Trice Stadium. The Hawkeyes have agreed to wear their black home jerseys for the game.
“One of the most important things we have worked on in the last year and a half has been our letterwinners organization,” Athletic Director Jamie Pollard said at a press conference Monday. “It’s critical to our future that we take the time to celebrate some of our greatest accomplishments.”
Iowa State worked out a deal with www.gridironghosts.com, who is supplying the replica uniforms.
Additionally, packages which include the helmet, jersey, pants and socks will be available for auction through the athletic department between Aug. 20 and Sept. 14.
Those uniform packages that aren’t sold before the game can still be purchased after the game on the Gridiron Ghosts Web site.
Along with honoring a past team, this promotion is also good for the athletic department’s pockets.
“There’s zero cost to us, that’s the best part of this deal,” Pollard said. “Gridironghost.com has contributed the funds to purchase the uniform sets for the entire team. It’s a great deal for us.”
In 1977, Iowa State finished the season with an 8-3 record, including a loss to North Carolina State in the Peach Bowl. The Cyclones earned a 24-21 victory over Nebraska in Lincoln that season, their first win on the road against the Cornhuskers in 17 years.
Dexter Green rushed for 1,000 yards that season and the Cyclones put four players on the all-conference team, including defensive tackle Tom Randall, who attended the press conference.
Also in attendance was Tom Buck, a punt returner on that Cyclone team.
They were coached by ISU football legend Earle Bruce.
“Iowa State means a lot to all these guys,” Randall said. “Earl Bruce means a lot to us. Earl was tough and he made us into tough guys.”
Also at the press conference Pollard announced the sale of season tickets are ahead of last year at this time. The announcement comes on the heels of Pollard’s decision not to offer single game tickets against Iowa, meaning only season ticket-holders could attend the game.
“Season ticket sales are off the charts,” Pollard said. “We’ve never been in this position so early. (It’s) six months before the start of the season and we almost have 3,000 new season ticket holders. Our fan base has answered the call and there is still a lot of gas left in the tank and this is another example of what we’re trying to do – to keep it fun for all those people who want to support the Cyclones.”
Additionally, Pollard has seen a jump in boosters.
“Since the first of the year, we’ve had almost 500 new donors to the National Cyclone Club,” Pollard said. “Also we’ve had 300 who have upgraded their membership. I know, because I signed personal letters to all 800 of them.”
