DIVING: Teammates spring into zone diving competition
March 2, 2007
Sophomore Haley Haynes and freshman Tien Tran hope to reach what every college student athlete strives for – the NCAA Championships.
The two Cyclone divers attempt to join their teammate senior swimmer Lauren Breunig by finishing in the top seven of their events at the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships. The competition is Friday through Sunday at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center in Austin, Texas.
Haynes will compete in the 1-meter springboard competition on Saturday and on the platform on Sunday. Tran is competing in both of those events, as well as the 3-meter springboard on Friday.
Diving coach Jeff Warrick said the only thing that they can control is their individual outcomes.
“I would like them to be at, near or even above their personal bests that they’ve gotten,” Warrick said. “That is what we’re shooting for and then really where they end up placing if they have done their best, that’s all they can do.”
Haynes and Tran both last competed in the Big 12 Championships from Feb. 14 to 17 and had several high finishes. Haynes finished 12th in the 1-meter and fourth in the platform, and Tran finished eighth on the 3-meter, 14th on the 1-meter and ninth on platform.
Tran said she is going to treat this weekend’s event like a conference meet and try to get personal bests in all three events.
“I would like to make finals in all three events,” Tran said. “Conference was a good experience to do everything the same that we are going to do this weekend.”
Haynes qualified for the Zone Diving Championships last year and placed 11th in both the 1-meter springboard and the platform.
Haynes, who has been battling an arm injury for the better part of the season, said she is going into this meet just wanting to have fun and compete.
“Jeff and I talked about it and my goal is just to dive,” Haynes said. “It will help knowing the atmosphere and the other people who aren’t in our conference, just the experience of having one year under your belt.”
Warrick said everyone wants to qualify for nationals, but not everyone gets that chance.
“It’s going to be a challenge for anybody and there is no proceed on if you do bad,” Warrick said. “It’s going to be a tough battle.”
