Cyclones capture first-round victory

MINNEAPOLIS – The madness will continue.
The ISU women, sitting as the sixth seed in the Dallas bracket, captured the first game in the NCAA Tournament with a 79-60 win 11th-seeded Washington. The win is the Cyclones’ first in the tournament since 2002, and the first in seniors Lyndsey Medders’ and Megan Ronhovde’s ISU careers.
The floor initially belonged to Washington with a sizable lead in the first five minutes, but Iowa State took hold of an 11-0 run in the middle of the first half to take the lead. Iowa State continued to pour on the offense while keeping Washington to 27 percent shooting from the floor. Iowa State’s wave of scoring that found the team up by 13 at halftime, including five treys. The Huskies never came within eight points in the second half.
Nicky Wieben claimed her stake in the paint with in the second half with 11 points, totaling 18 overall in the game. She was also a presence from the outside with two 3-pointers. Toccara Ross, Alison Lacey and Medders rounded out the scoring with 12 points apiece for the Cyclones. Medders tossed in 10 assists for Iowa State, and Ronhovde kept on the defensive with a game-high eight rebounds. Washington senior Cameo Hicks scored 19 for the Huskies in her last game.
Iowa State will take on the winner of No. 3 Georgia in the second round at 6 p.m. Monday in Minneapolis.
