Men’s lacrosse heads north
March 29, 2007
The Cyclones will continue their Upper Midwest Division A league play this upcoming weekend as they head on the road to face two competitive teams.
Coming off a successful win over St. Cloud this past weekend, the ISU Men’s lacrosse team has nothing but confidence heading into this weekend’s play in Mankato, Minn. The Cyclones will face Marquette University and Minnesota State University, – two teams that only boost the hopes the Cyclones (1-2) have of winning this weekend.
“The two teams we play this weekend are teams that are at the same caliber and level as us,” captain Jake Oakland said.
Midfielder Dan “Rabbit” Zimmerman agrees, but says “we feel that it is definitely two very winnable games for us.”
Marquette (1-1) and Minnesota State (0-2) both participated in last weekend’s games, hosted by the Cyclones in Ames. The outcome of these two teams was very similar to that of Iowa State, who went 1-2 for the weekend, losing to University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and University of Minnesota-Duluth, as well as beating St. Cloud State. Minnesota State lost both games played, against Minnesota and Minnesota-Duluth, and Marquette went 1-1 for the weekend, losing to Minnesota and, like the Cyclones, beating St. Cloud by just one goal.
It was the defeat over St. Cloud that enhanced the Cyclones’ confidence for the upcoming weekend.
“We really want to carry the momentum from our last victory,” midfielder Lance Allgood said. “We finally got a win, so we know what it feels like and we’re looking for a lot more.”
Along with the momentum the team hopes to carry over, Iowa State hopes for the same success in passing and team work they showed last weekend.
“We really had some great team building last weekend,” Zimmerman said. “We’re starting to work well together, and taking that team effort up there [to Mankato] this weekend should really help.”
Furthermore, the Cyclones are going to be looking back again to their rookie goaltenders Brendan Gross and John Urick for big saves between the pipes this weekend.
