JENSEN: GSB Week provides lectures, activities and scholarship opportunities
March 25, 2007
The Government of the Student Body has worked throughout the year to strengthen students’ voices and enhance students’ experiences through active representation, engagement and support. As the outgoing president, I would like to let the student body know about some important opportunities that are available before the end of the school year.
GSB Week will take place on campus this week, and will include student booths, administrative luncheons, Daily editorials and an increased distribution of information.
At noon Tuesday in the Gold Room of the Memorial Union, Jamie Pollard will discuss the ISU Athletic Department.
At noon Wednesday in the Gold Room, Vice President for Student Affairs Thomas Hill will discuss student programs and opportunities.
At noon Thursday in Room 3512 in the Memorial Union, Executive Assistant to the President Tahira Hira will speak about the sesquicentennial celebration and events. Luncheons are open to all students, and food is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
GSB is also looking for motivated students to get involved in the distribution of tuition and state appropriations. The new budget model requires that students serve on five advisory committees that make funding recommendations. Ten student seats are available, including the seats for Administrative Support Programs, Information Technology Services, Business and Finance, Parks Library and Student Affairs Advisory Committees. If you have interest in any of these committees, please e-mail me at [email protected].
There are also opportunities to recognize outstanding students, faculty and staff members through the GSB Campus Impact Awards. During the GSB inauguration, awards will be presented to the Student Organization of the Year, Student Leader of the Year and the Faculty or Staff Member of the Year. GSB will also award one $500 Jack Trice Memorial Scholarship, which is available to a student who has demonstrated commitment to social causes. To nominate an organization or individual, or to apply for the scholarship, please go to www.gsb.iastate.edu.
GSB has also been very involved in the development and distribution of information regarding student services changes. Parks Library, Recreation Services and CyRide are all considering changes during the coming year. If you would like specific information about each, please log on to their respective Web sites. Also, CyRide will host an open forum regarding changes being proposed by the Transit Feasibility Study Group, which will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday in Room 3534 of the Memorial Union.
Finally, there are still opportunities to get involved in GSB, lobbying initiatives and student opportunities on campus. Cabinet applications are being accepted for the 2007-08 academic year and motivated, involved and innovative students are encouraged to apply for one of many positions. ISU Ambassadors will be recruiting new members in the fall and are an essential part of the lobbying efforts at the state Capitol.
During the past year, I have had the honor of serving as your president. I have sincerely enjoyed my experiences within the Government of the Student Body, and take pride in the initiatives we have pursued regarding communication, lobbying efforts and student involvement. GSB initiated many events, opportunities and information for students this year, including Political Action Week, GSB 101, WinterFest, Student Day at the Capitol, the GSB Web site and many, many others. With your involvement, input and support, GSB can continue to represent, engage and support students.
Thank you for a fantastic year.
Go Cyclones!
