GSB Week encourages interaction

Students wanting to find out more about the Government of the Student Body will have their chance for hands-on learning with the ruling body Monday through Friday during GSB Week.

Jenna Jones, GSB director of public relations and senior in management, said GSB Week is a time to educate students about GSB and interact with students outside of the office.

As part of the week’s events, luncheons will be held with prominent figures on campus to give students a chance to talk with individuals who they usually don’t have an opportunity to meet.

“That’s more designed to open dialogue with administrators and students who may not normally have that interaction with the administrators at Iowa State,” she said.

Emily Jensen, GSB president and senior in political science, said the luncheons will provide an opportunity for students and administrators to talk with each other about what things are going on around campus.

“We’ve really gotten a wide variety of administrators to come talk to students,” she said.

The luncheons will be held at noon on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week, Jones said. The luncheons will begin with the administrator introducing himself or herself, and most of the time will be dedicated to students who want to ask questions. Speakers will include Athletic Director Jamie Pollard, Vice President for Student Affairs Tom Hill and Executive Assistant to the President Tahira Hira.

“Most of it is just going to be a question and answer [session] for the students,” Jones said.

GSB members from all three branches will be at the booths everyday on campus, Jones said.

Applications for GSB awards, due Friday, will also be available at the booths. The awards being given are for: Student Organization of the Year, Faculty or Staff of the Year and Student Leader of the Year.

There will also be information available to students about how to get involved with GSB, including cabinet applications and general information about GSB – brochures and handouts – explaining what GSB is and does.

Jensen said she would, along with the other GSB volunteers, be at the booths and luncheons, talking to students about GSB.

“Hopefully [we’ll be] just getting all sorts of information out,” she said.

Jones said GSB Week is an opportunity for GSB to educate students about the organization and to get input directly from students.

“I really just think that the most important and the biggest goal of this event is for GSB to be proactive and to reach out to students,” she said.

Jensen said GSB Week is being held later than in the past, but this is a good time for students to become familiar with GSB.

“Right now, this year, I think that there’s a lot more going on campus to really tell students about,” she said.

Jensen said the fact that inauguration is being held on April 9 gives an even better reason to have GSB Week now.

“Every new member of GSB will go through inauguration in two weeks, so it’s really a very good time to raise their awareness level,” Jensen said.

Jensen said the new budget advisory committees are also something students need to know about.

GSB has been asked to appoint 10 students to five budget model advisory committees, Jensen said.

Getting feedback from students is also an important part of GSB Week, Jensen said. The information gathered during GSB Week would be passed on to the new members to use in their new term.
