TENNIS: Iowa State to play host to struggling Kansas

The ISU tennis team aims to make a home stand this weekend as it plays host to Big 12 opponent Kansas on Saturday at Ames Racquet and Fitness Center, 320 S. 17th St. The match against Kansas State on Friday was canceled because of weather.

Iowa State (4-3, 0-3) is coming off of a trip to Colorado in which it split matches with Northern Colorado and Colorado, and is hoping to find its first Big 12 victory of the season. All three Big 12 opponents the Cyclones have faced this season have been nationally ranked and Kansas State would have been their fourth straight if not for the cancellation.

The Cyclones’ Saturday opponent, the Kansas Jayhawks (2-8, 0-2), lost their last match to Oklahoma State last weekend in Stillwater, Okla., and have struggled on the road this season, losing three straight away duals.

Coach Michele Conlon sees this weekend as a great opportunity to steal a Big 12 win, but is aware the ugly record of Kansas may not be indicative of its true strength.

“Both teams [Kansas State and Kansas] have had pretty strong nonconference schedules so it’s sometimes hard to judge how well they’re doing in terms of win-loss records,” Conlon said.

The Cyclones hope to end years of Big 12 frustration this weekend as they field one of the more successful teams in recent history. The players are confident they have the talent and the drive to succeed where previous teams have failed.

“Obviously, I think if we focus on those statistics, it looks like it’s a pretty good opportunity and I think we’re definitely hungry for that Big 12 win,” said junior Chrissy Derouin. “We’re always looking for it, every match is a new opportunity to get that conference win. I think this weekend against Kansas and Kansas State, we’ll be going after it.”

Match play begins at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center. Admission is free.
