EDITORIAL: Students deserve a choice

Well, that’s disappointing.

In approximately three weeks, it’ll be that time of year again – where we vote for our Government of the Student Body representation. The field isn’t crowded, but is it ever? There is an especially noticeable empty spot on the president/vice president ballot, where only one pair has announced its intention to run.

The pair, GSB senators Brian Phillips, junior in political science, and Ian Guffy, senior in computer science, has to gather 1,500 signatures by Feb. 23. If they accomplish this, they’ll be the only individuals on the ballot for the most powerful GSB positions – that’s not how it’s supposed to work.

Ideally, we would have more than one group to choose from. The voters could select leaders they feel will take the student voice in the correct direction, that have the charisma and conviction to battle rising tuition and improve student life.

This isn’t to slam Phillips and Guffy, who have a reasonable amount of experience in GSB and are running on an admirable – albeit typical – campaign of increasing GSB-student communication, reining in tuition and improving Campustown. They’re qualified for the job.

It’s just that, as voters, we’d like – and deserve – a choice.

The Daily editorial board has long accused GSB as not serving its function. To generate only one set of candidates for the most powerful positions in the organization only highlights that point.

GSB has been fighting student apathy for years. But if those involved in GSB don’t even care enough to run the ship, what good is the rhetoric encouraging students to care about it?
