Tennis serves shutout, goes 7-0 in front of Rochester fans

Call it their home away from home.
The ISU tennis team dismantled the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay with a combination of solid play and overwhelming crowd support.
Iowa State (1-1) handed the Phoenix their second loss in a row with a 7-0 drubbing, including a sweep of all three doubles matches. With nearly half the ISU squad hailing from Rochester, the fans in attendance were decidedly Cyclone-friendly.
“It was awesome. I had an opponent after the match ask me how many family members I had,” said junior Caitlin Loprinzi. “It was only three but I pretty much knew everyone there. I taught there [Rochester Tennis Club] over the summer so a lot of the kids came back and watched us.”
The Palen sisters were the other two Minnesota natives and didn’t disappoint the home crowd, going a collective 4-0 in singles and doubles competition. Freshman Alyssa Palen said she thought the 96-28 game edge may have been slightly misleading.
“We actually had some really good matches.” Alyssa said. “The second doubles had a close match. I think Green Bay just came out with the attitude that they had nothing to lose so they were just firing away in doubles. In singles, we were really ready and focused. We were all pumped to be in Rochester with all the fans.”
The No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Kara Hickey and senior Eve Soriano continued their unbeaten streak with an 8-1 victory over their opponent. That puts them at a perfect 4-0 for the spring season.
The closest match of the day belonged to junior Chrissy Derouin as she held off Laura Bartingale, 6-4, 7-5 at the No. 5 slot. Derouin teamed up with Alyssa Palen to defeat the duo of Bartingale and Amy Meissner 8-0 in a ill-contested third doubles match.
The team will be back in action Friday when it hosts the Creighton Bluejays. Matches begin at 4 p.m. at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center. Admission is free.
