And the winner is not. . .
February 23, 2007
The film industry will award some of the best of the best this Sunday when Ellen DeGeneres hosts the 79th Annual Academy Awards at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. The nominees were announced in January, but not everyone can be up for the prestigious award. What about those that were good, but just not good enough? Here’s some winners of some nonexistent awards.
Most Overlooked
1. “Thank You for Smoking” – With its biting wit about the tobacco industry and fast-talking spin doctor who tries to be a good father while still promoting his product, “Thank You for Smoking” is a great satire. Aaron Eckhart delivers a strong leading performance, with Maria Bello, William H. Macy and Robert Duvall in some hilarious supporting roles. Katie Holmes also stars as a newspaper reporter with an ulterior motive.
2. “Akeelah and the Bee” – A young girl from Los Angeles struggles against her home life to excel. She enters a spelling bee to appease her principal after missing school, but she wins and works her way up to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. “Akeelah” features Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett, with Keke Palmer playing the title role. It’s an inspirational story that captured a lot of buzz, but no nominations this year.
3. Brad Pitt was ignored for his performance in “Babel,” which follows several families and the events that happen following unfortunate miscommunications.
4. Emily Blunt received a Golden Globe nomination for her supporting role in “The Devil Wears Prada” but failed to garner an Oscar nod for her role as Meryl Streep’s snobbish assistant.
5. “Children of Men” – Although the film received three Oscar nominations, it failed to be recognized for its performances. Clive Owen and Michael Caine star in this dark story about the extinction of humanity because of unexplained infertility in a war-torn world.
Best Family Ties
Will Smith is nominated for Best Actor in “The Pursuit of Happyness.” However, another Smith also played a big role in the movie. Smith’s own son, Jayden, plays his son in the film, to great effect. Their real-life bond carries over to the screen in this inspiring tale of a salesman who struggles through a separation and homelessness to earn a spot in a competitive internship.
Funniest Hair
Many think Ron Howard’s version of the highly-anticipated “The Da Vinci Code,” based on the book, failed to live up to the hype. Although the movie is, essentially, a mystery, one of the most baffling parts of the film has nothing to do with the story. The controversy over Mary Magdalene? Forget that. The more important question is: Who was Tom Hanks’ hairstylist?
Most Likely to Get Lost in the Space-time Continuum
“The Lake House” – Could anyone really follow the nuances of time travel in this film? Sandra Bullock plays a woman who lives in the same house that Keanu Reeves did, only two years later than he did. Through their letters in their mailboxes, they fall in love and have to think of some way to cheat time to be together.
Biggest Drop in an Actor’s Career
Eddie Murphy is nominated for Best Supporting Actor for “Dreamgirls,” his first Academy nomination ever. Shortly after being seen in this praise-worthy role, however, “Norbit” opened, in which Murphy plays both a man and his fiancee. This farcical film isn’t the best way to thank the film community for an Oscar nomination or prove Murphy’s award mettle.
Most Adorable Cast
“Happy Feet” may have earned a nomination for Best Animated Feature, but it probably also featured one of the most lovable casts of the year. What is cuter than a singing and dancing penguin? The movie may have missed the mark when it was used as a vehicle for a political environmental message, but the penguins appealed both to children and adults.
