ONLINE EXCLUSIVE: Bryan’s Basketball Bonanza
February 8, 2007
Each week the Daily’s hoopster, Bryan Hooyman, brings you up to speed on how Iowa’s other Division I basketball teams are faring.
Iowa (14-10) – The Hawkeyes defeated the Indiana Hoosiers, 81-75 on Saturday. Both guard Adam Haluska – who scored 33 points – and forward Tyler Smith – scoring 18 points – managed to hold off a furious Indiana rally in the final two minutes. Wednesday, the Hawkeyes went to face the Minnesota Golden Gophers (9-15) and won, 91-78. The Hawkeyes look to solidify their fourth place standing within the Big Ten conference even more so as they travel to Wisconsin to take on the No. 4 ranked Badgers (23-2).
Drake (13-11) – The Bulldogs are coming off of a loss to the Creighton Bluejays (17-7). Bluejays guard Nate Funk put down 21 buckets as forward Dane Watts added another 16 to lead the Jays past the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs are hoping to turn things around as they square off against conference rivals on the road at both the UNI Panthers (16-8) tomorrow and the Bradley Braves (16-9) on Sunday. They face a Valentine’s Day showdown in Des Moines against the Wichita State Shockers (15-9).
Northern Iowa Panthers (16-8) – The Panthers traveled on Saturday to Evansville, Ind., to take on the Aces, where the Panthers clawed out a victory, 79-71. Earlier in the week, on Monday, the Panthers lost 59-46 to the Indiana State Sycamores (12-11). The Panthers will play host to a couple of conference foes starting with the Drake Bulldogs (13-11) tonight, followed by the Missouri State Bears (18-7) on Saturday. Then on Tuesday, the Panthers will travel to Creighton to pounce on the Bluejays (17-7).
