In their Big 12 Tournament opener, No. 19 Iowa State downed Kansas 75-58.

It was the second straight game the Cyclones played the Jayhawks, but that didn’t lead to complacency from the team. The Cyclones had three players in double figures and the team had an efficient night shooting while the Jayhawks struggled in the first half. With the win, Iowa State moved to the tournament semifinal game.

On Monday, Iowa State faced the Jayhawks for their last regular season game which the Cyclones won 69-49.

Due to the Cyclones finishing second in the conference, the team had a bye on Friday while awaiting the winner of No. 10 seed Kansas and No. 7 seed Oklahoma State.

Kansas won the game 76-66, but their time at the tourney was ended by Bridget Carleton and company.

Carleton led all scorers with 18 points while adding seven rebounds.

Kristin Scott had 15 points and six rebounds and Madi Wise had 15 points and 10 rebounds which marked her first double-double of the season.

Collectively, Iowa State shot 45.6 percent from the floor and 38.5 percent from three and buried Kansas in the second half.

In the second half, Iowa State shot 51.8 percent from the floor which grew the team’s 30-20 lead at half.

The Jayhawks struggled to find the bottom of the basket in the first half with their 20 first half points coming off of 26.9 percent shooting from the floor.

Kansas shot significantly better in the second half — hitting 45.6 percent of their total shots — but it was too late as Iowa State had found its shooting groove.

Next on the slate for the Cyclones is the winner of No. 3 seed Texas and No. 6 Texas Christian University (TCU) in the semifinals of the tournament.

Against Texas, Iowa State lost at home 64-62, but beat the Longhorns in Austin 82-73. The Cyclones also split against TCU by winning at home 92-54 and losing on the road 76-69.

The Cyclones and the winner of Texas and TCU will play at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday with the game being televised on FS1.

The winner of the game will advance to the tournament’s championship game. If Iowa State makes it, it will be the first time since the 2012-13 season the Cyclones have made an appearance in the championship game.

The Cyclones fell to No. 1 seed Baylor 75-47 as Baylor’s Brittney Griner scored 31 points.

If Iowa State makes the championship game, it will also most likely face a Baylor, who is the tournament’s No. 1 seed after going undefeated in conference play.

In addition, Baylor is anchored by another post player in Kalani Brown, the player Carleton edged out for the Big 12 Conference Player of the Year award.
