That’s more like it.

Iowa State snapped a season-high five-game losing streak and picked up its third conference win of the season with a 71-58 victory over the Baylor Bears on Saturday.

The Cyclones upped their record to 12-10, 3-5 in the Big 12, and are 7-0 all-time against Baylor in Hilton Coliseum.

Iowa State broke a routine it had fallen into lately of getting off to sluggish starts to begin both the game and the second half. After scoring on four of their first seven possessions, the Cyclones weren’t in a big hole right away.

“We talked after the last couple games about how poorly we started the game or started the second half, but even though they scored a couple baskets early, we were able to score on four of our first seven possessions,” said coach Greg McDermott. “Then we scored on our first six possessions [in the second half]. I though that was important for us.”

In fact, after a Mike Taylor jumper gave the Cyclones an 11-10 lead just over six minutes into the game, the Cyclones never trailed again. Taylor led all scorers with 21 points and threw in a career-high eight assists in the Cyclones’ return to Hilton Coliseum.

“It feels real good to win,” Taylor said. “Being back at Hilton, that gave us the momentum and gave us the energy boost we needed. It felt real good to get this win today.”

An even more impressive performance came from freshman sensation Wesley Johnson, who continued to terrorize opponents inside with 14 points and 10 rebounds, his 11th double-double of the season.

His 11 double-doubles are a new ISU freshman record for double-doubles in a season, a mark Johnson may keep rewriting as the season goes on.

“It feels good that I’m the leader and the record holder,” Johnson said. “It feels good that I’m the record holder at something, but for the game today it feels good to get a win.”

Johnson’s 10 boards also moved him into fifth place on the ISU freshman list for rebounds in a season with 197. Johnson passed Julius Michalik, who pulled down 195 in the 1991-92 season.

Johnson is all but a lock to move into second place, needing just 16 more rebounds to reach that plateau, but first will be more of a challenge.

Dean Uthoff holds the all-time freshman mark at 306 during the 1976-77 season, meaning Johnson would have to average 12.1 rebounds per game to break the mark assuming the Cyclones play only one Big 12 Tournament game.

“The scoring is one thing,” McDermott said. “What amazes me, as physical as the Big 12 is, how Wes continues to do it rebounding the basketball. It’s really remarkable what he’s done.”

Jiri Hubalek got back on track offensively for the Cyclones as well, pouring in 19 points and nine rebounds and playing with a fire that Iowa State hasn’t seen from him in a while.

“I think he got mad after he got a couple elbows in the mouth,” Johnson said. “I think he got mad and then he started executing. He saw he was bleeding in the game, and I think he took it out on them. He couldn’t hit them back, so he just scored.”

Hubalek’s presence down low took some pressure off of Taylor, helping him create and get the offense running smoothly.

“The past couple of games Jiri hasn’t been establishing himself down low,” Taylor said. “Our objective was to get it down there to him and get him going early to open everything up on the perimeter.”

Iowa State squares off against Missouri on Tuesday. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. inside Hilton Coliseum.
