If the movie wins Best Picture honors. . .

Anthony Capps

No matter who wins the top honor, the five nominees for best picture will all be the first in a long time or first ever to be recognized by their genre on another unique aspect.

“Babel”: The first movie with two performers earning Oscar nominations for their American film debut.

“The Departed”: The first mob movie since “The Godfather Part II” in 1974 and the first win ever for a Scorsese movie.

“Letters From Iwo Jima”: The first movie ever where English is scarcely spoken and the first war movie since “Braveheart.”

“Little Miss Sunshine”: The first comedy since “Annie Hall” in 1977 and the first movie to win with two credited directors.

“The Queen”: The first biography flick since 2001’s “A Beautiful Mind.”
