Bryan’s Basketball Bonanza

Each week the Daily’s hoopster, Bryan Hooyman, brings you up to speed on how Iowa’s other Division I basketball teams are faring.

Iowa Hawkeyes (10-8) – In the past week, the Hawkeyes have been amid the ups and downs of the dynamic world of college hoops.

Last Saturday, the Hawkeyes squared off against Minnesota (7-11) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Both teams put forth very lackluster performances, but Iowa was able to build on a six point halftime lead and win 60-49. On Tuesday, the Hawkeyes traveled to Indiana to take on the Hoosiers (13-4). Despite a 21-point performance by Iowa’s Adam Haluska, the Hawkeyes lost 71-64, thanks in part to the 34-17 halftime deficit.

The Hawkeyes travel to Ohio this Saturday to face No. 7 Ohio State (15-3). Iowa appears to be severely outmatched against the Buckeyes’ defense, which has accumulated 91 steals and blocked 70 shots this season.

Northern Iowa Panthers (14-4) – The Panthers gained a huge win over Missouri State (14-5) Thursday night, knocking the Bears out of first place in the Missouri Valley Conference. UNI is now second in the conference, just a game behind Creighton (12-6).

The Panthers square off against the Indiana State Sycamores (11-6) on Saturday. UNI will have to work as a team to contain the offensive onslaught of Sycamores guard Gabriel Moore, who averages 24 points per game. On Tuesday, the Southern Illinois Salukis (14-5) hope to avenge the loss they suffered earlier on Jan. 6 against the Panthers (66-61).

Drake Bulldogs (12-7) – After a tumultuous start in conference play, Drake may have finally turned things around. Thursday night, the Bulldogs earned a big 74-68 win over Indiana State. On Sunday, they will travel north to take on the mediocre Redbirds once again in Illinois.

The Bulldogs hosted the Illinois State Redbirds (9-9) last Saturday, winning 70-66 to pick up their first conference win. On Monday, however, the Bulldogs were back to their old ways, losing their sixth conference game of the year to Southern Illinois, 72-62.
