Heavyweight David Zabriskie scored a dual-clinching technical fall on Saturday night as third-ranked Iowa State topped No. 20 Nebraska, 25-12, to open the Big 12 season.
Zabriskie, ranked 18th in the nation, came into his match needing only a decision to give the Cyclones (7-3, 1-0 Big 12) the dual. The stocky freshman beat Cornhusker fill-in Tom Rice, 17-1, in 5 minutes, 41 seconds.
Rice is filling in for two-time NCAA qualifier Jon May, who is out for the rest of the year with a season-ending injury.
Iowa State won seven out of 10 matches, including a 6-3 upset by Nick Fanthorpe over eighth-ranked Paul Donahoe to close the dual.
The win ended a two-meet losing streak against the Huskers (7-4, 0-1).
“We had to come in and wrestle well,” said coach Cael Sanderson. “Some of our guys wrestled fantastic matches. We are competing as a team and working hard.”
Fanthorpe scored a reversal and two takedowns in the third period against Donahoe to secure the victory.
Travis Paulson (165) and Jake Varner (184) each scored major decision victories for the Cyclones.
Nebraska’s three wins came as eighth-ranked senior Dominick Moyer (141) took out 10th-ranked Cyclone Mitch Mueller, 4-2, and 19th-ranked freshman Craig Brester (197) upset fifth-ranked senior Kurt Backes, 4-3.
Marc Harwood (174) was down 3-0 to ISU senior Grant Turner but scored a fall at 4:06.
