Winter Market offers venue for local goods

From now until the end of February, the Ames Farmers’ Market will be showcasing several vendors at the Winter Market.

The market is held at Reiman Gardens from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Wednesday. Vendors set up their tables in the events hallway and sell food and crafts.

Many baked goods are for sale, as well as winter squash, apples, organic jelly, hand-crafted jewelry and home-sewn goods.

All vendors are from Ames and the surrounding areas and all products are produced locally.

Admission is free, but donations are welcomed.

Colleen Rogers, program coordinator for Reiman Gardens said there were 30 visitors to the Winter Market during the first two weeks.

However, only six of those guests were students.

Rogers said either students don’t know about the Winter Market or they just don’t care.

Sadie Leingang, junior in early childhood education, was not familiar with the Winter Market, but after hearing about it, she seemed interested.

“I would go check it out,” Leingang said. “I might not buy anything, but it would be fun just to see what they have.”

Whether you want to buy local goods or just want to experience something different, the Winter Market has something to offer.

For example, Deb and Steve Yokiel have been making and selling candles for years. The husband and wife created a long-burning candle that is environmentally friendly because it is made of soy wax.

These candles come in a variety of colors and scents.

This past year, they have also added bath and body products to the mix, many of which are also made with soy products.
