Key matches in last weekend’s National Duals

Caleb Nemmers

133- Nick Gallick vs.

Coleman Scott (OSU)

Gallick got the Cyclones rolling by earning an early first period takedown against two-time All-American Coleman Scott (fifth-place NCAA finisher last year) and holding on to a 3-2 decision. Gallick, a freshman, looked like he had done his homework on Scott, wrestling a smart, tactically defensive match reminiscent of his brother, former ISU wrestler Nate Gallick. Showing vast improvement from earlier in the season, the match was easily the most impressive win of Nick’s young Cyclone career.

141- Mitch Mueller vs. Nathan Morgan (OSU)

Mueller kept the momentum rolling for Iowa State, coming back from a 3-1 deficit in the third period by keeping pressure on the All-American and forcing a stalling call with only 11 seconds to go in the third period. In overtime, Mueller wasted no time continuing what he started in regulation and took Morgan down only nine seconds into the extra period with a single leg takedown, giving the Cyclones the lead for good.

165- Travis Paulson vs. Johny Hendricks (OSU)

The battle that has gone on throughout these two All-Americans’ collegiate careers seems to get more heated every time these two step out on the mat. This one did not disappoint as Paulson took the lead in the second period with a takedown on the returning national champion. That lead didn’t last long as Hendricks kept up the pace of the match by escaping immediately and taking down Paulson with 28 seconds to go in the second period. Hendricks was able to fight off Paulson’s late takedown attempts and seal a 4-3 victory.

197- Kurt Backes vs. Chris Weidman (Hofstra)

Backes is on a torrid pace toward March with a huge victory over fourth-ranked and returning All-American Chris Weidman. Backes wasted no time putting Weidman on his back and sticking him for the fall only 36 seconds into the match. Backes was the only Cyclone to go 4-0 in the tournament, earning 18 team points and having one of his most successful tournaments of the season.
