After going a perfect 8-0 during the month of December, the ISU women’s basketball team suffered its second loss of the season Saturday, falling 66-56 to Missouri at the Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Mo.

For the Cyclones (13-2, 1-1 Big 12), it was the first road test in their tough Big 12 schedule. Iowa State started its conference schedule Jan. 3, earning a 61-50 victory over the Kansas Jayhawks at Hilton Coliseum.

Coach Bill Fennelly said his team had a legitimate chance to beat Missouri (13-2, 1-1 Big 12) and get an important road win, but failed to execute down the home stretch.

“When you play on the road – in the Big 12 or anywhere – all you want is a chance, and we had a four-point lead with seven minutes left in the game,” Fennelly said.

The Cyclones held the lead until just inside of six minutes, when Missouri’s Alyssa Hollins made a 3-pointer, sending the Tigers on an 11-0 run and opening a 62-53 Missouri lead that they never surrendered.

The Cyclones entered the game on a 10-game winning streak, dating back to Nov. 25. The streak was only two shy of tying the school record of 12 consecutive wins, a feat accomplished in 1996 and 2001. Both of those squads were also coached by Fennelly.

Sophomore Nicky Wieben averaged 15.4 points per game in the seven contests over Winter Break to lead the offensive charge for the Cyclones. Senior Lyndsey Medders, who entered conference play ranked second in the nation in assists per game, set the all-time ISU record for total assists Dec. 30 against Loyola Marymount. Medders now sits at 603 for her career and is averaging 6.7 per game this season.

“It is a record that was made and set by other people,” Medders said after breaking the record. “My coaches put me in a good position and my teammates made shots. I’m just honored.”

Iowa State is on the road for its next game, traveling to Boulder, Co., to play the Buffaloes at 9 p.m. Wednesday. Colorado (7-6, 1-0 Big 12) defeated Missouri 71-59 in its first conference game Jan. 3.
