Women’s rugby asks GSB for funding
January 17, 2007
The women’s rugby team will try to tackle funding issues at Wednesday’s GSB meeting.
Two important bills coming up in this week’s meeting ask for funding for the AIDS Walk/Run and the women’s rugby team.
The run’s coordinators are requesting funding of $100 and the rugby team is asking for $7,364 to help go to the national championship, said Ian Guffy, GSB senator and senior in computer science.
According to the bill, the estimated total for the entire trip to nationals is $29,298.
“I think women’s rugby will ultimately pass,” Guffy said. “Generally, what we ask groups to do is to come up with half the money and we’ll come up with the other half. They’re asking for much less than half of it.”
Guffy did not expect the bill regarding the student organization recognition policy to be voted on this week.
“I’m fairly certain that it will be postponed at least a week,” he said.
GSB senator Zaal Tonia, senior in physics, predicted a similar outcome this week for the policy bill.
“I’m thinking it very well may be tabled, so we might not even discuss it for a couple of weeks,” he said.
However, there will be a presentation regarding the information gathered at the policy forums from last semester, Tonia said.
“[It] will be part of the discussion and I expect the bill will find its way to business at a later date,” he said.
The intention of the bill is to endorse the direction that the Student Organization Recognition Board is taking toward coming up with a new policy, Tonia said.
Regardless of whether this bill passes, Tonia said he believes that GSB’s role in the policy situation is far from over.
“I think that it will continue to be an issue that will be talked about for a number of reasons,” he said.
An open forum will give all students wanting to give their opinion an opportunity to speak, said Tonia.
However, since there may not be a significant amount of discussion this week, this would be more of an chance to learn about the issue this week.
“I think that it still will be a good opportunity to hear about what exactly the policy means for students,” he said.
Wednesday’s meeting will be a good place to become educated on the subject, Tonia said.
“I still do encourage students to show up,” he said.
“At least to hear about what is going on.”
