Chizik selects coordinators

New ISU football coach Gene Chizik announced his offensive and defensive coordinators Monday, naming Stephen F. Austin head coach Robert McFarland offensive coordinator and former Alabama-Birmingham coach William Bolt as defensive coordinator.

McFarland led Stephen F. Austin finished in a tie for second in the Southland Conference in 2006, and its four conference wins were twice as many than in its previous two years.

“Robert McFarland has had tremendous success as an offensive coordinator, and I think he is the best offensive line coach in the country,” Chizik said in a press release. “He has head coaching experience, and I’ve seen his one-on-one mentoring ability with student-athletes.”

Bolt, who worked with Chizik at Clemson, coached seven teams to conference titles between 1981-2005, and allowed just over 290 yards of total offense per game while with Troy from 1990-2002, including just 277 yards per game in 2002, fourth-best in the nation.

“I’ve coached with Wayne Bolt and we have had similar defensive philosophies,” Chizik said. “He has a great defensive mind and is an exceptional teacher. The players he coaches gravitate to him because of his personality. I am gratified to start my staff with two coaches with proven track records of success.”
