An ISU athlete was suspended from the football team Thursday morning following his arrest for theft and burglary.

Wendell Kellen White, freshman in liberal arts and sciences-open option and redshirt defensive back on the ISU football team, turned himself into the ISU Police at about 5:45 a.m. Thursday at the ISU Police Office.

“The detectives notified White and told him that we had a warrant and made arrangements for his surrender,” said ISU Police Cmdr. Gene Deisinger.

White has been accused of stealing an IBM ThinkPad computer belonging to Danielle Hargens, sophomore in health and human performance, from her room in Buchanan Hall. Hargens reported the theft of her laptop on Sept. 9.

White is currently facing one charge of third-degree burglary, which is a Class D felony, and one charge of third-degree theft, which is an aggravated misdemeanor, Deisinger said.

Through the investigation, ISU Police were able to determine the computer was in White’s possession. While acting on a search warrant, members of ISU Police recovered a laptop matching the description of the stolen computer in White’s dorm room on Oct. 9.

“The forensic examination found different documents and settings that confirmed the computer was [Hargens’],” Deisinger said.

The Story County Attorney’s Office will be prosecuting the case. The maximum sentence that he could potentially face is no more than two years imprisonment and a fine between $500 and $5,000 for the misdemeanor charge and imprisonment of no more than five years with a fine between $750 and $7,500 for the felony charge.

White was transported to the Story County Jail.
