Red-hot Cyclones on fire, win fifth straight

The ISU women’s volleyball team reached yet another milestone Saturday night, as the Cyclones swept Kansas to pick up a school record-tying fifth-straight conference victory. This landmark had not been reached by Iowa State since 1990, when the Cyclones were members of the Big Eight Conference.

A crowd of 1,474 at Hilton Coliseum witnessed Iowa State (17-7, 9-5 Big 12) hit .344 as it wiped the floor with the Jayhawks (10-14, 3-12) for its ninth Big 12 victory (30-18, 30-22, 30-23), matching the team’s conference win output from 2005.

“I really like how we are playing right now,” said coach Christy Johnson. “I think the five wins in a row are a reflection of that. We have a lot of confidence, are in a good rhythm and we’re healthy, so this puts us in really good shape.”

Junior Erin Boeve hit .435 and led all players with a match-high four blocks and 14 kills.

Katie Churm led the team defensively with 17 digs, including the 1,339th of her career in game one, moving her into third place on the ISU all-time record list.

The Cyclones jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead in game one, highlighted by two kills and a block by Boeve. Kansas cut the lead 16-12 before Iowa State scored 10 of the next 11 points to go ahead 26-13, eventually winning 30-18.

The Cyclone defense continued to dominate in game two, holding Kansas to a dismal .075 hitting percentage and rolling to a 30-22 victory.

“All of the players have made a little more effort defensively,” Johnson said. “We have been working on defense a lot in practice, and I think it’s showing in the matches.”

Game three had spelled trouble for the Cyclones recently, as they failed to finish a sweep by dropping the third game in three of their previous four wins. Saturday night, however, was a different story. Iowa State never trailed in game three while hitting a blistering .429.

Senior Katie Jessen had four of her 13 kills in the final game for the Cyclones, and Boeve capped off the win by putting down her eighth kill of game three for the 30-23 victory.

“These games have really helped us understand what we need to do in order to be successful,” said senior Jessica Klein, who added 11 kills for the Cyclones. “We are all finally coming together as a team. Everybody is doing their job and they are doing it well, which makes every one else’s job a little bit easier.”

The Cyclones, who have gained sole possession of fourth place in the Big 12, now look toward the daunting task of the No. 1 Nebraska Cornhuskers (22-0, 14-0), who will visit Ames on Wednesday for a 6:30 p.m. contest at the Hilton Coliseum.
