GSB highlights student-senator relations

The Government of the Student Body will have its weekly meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, when president and senior in political science Emily Jensen will be giving the state of the student body address.

The speech will focus on past successes and future plans.

One of the points Jensen will highlight is how she and her staff have strived to increase the communication between the students and GSB.

“One of the main goals that Sara [Faber, vice president of GSB] and I set forth was to increase the communication to the student body, and this has really been done really well this session,” Jensen said.

Things they have done to accomplish this includes adding a public relations committee, which has worked alongside the director of public relations to get information about GSB to the public, Jensen said.

She added that the new Web site and blog are also part of this plan.

The success of Political Action Week will also be highlighted in Wednesday’s speech. Also, a number of elected politicians, such as Gov.-elect Chet Culver, have pledged to fully fund the regent’s request for funding, and GSB looks forward to working with them, Jensen said.

Plans for the future will also be discussed. The Multicultural Center will be established if the fee is passed by the Board of Regents in December, Jensen said.

The Student Affairs Commission, a board through City Council that makes recommendations that pertain to students, will be discussed.

“The very first meeting of the Student Affairs Commission will be held on Thursday of this week at the City Council,” she said.

Jensen said lobbying efforts will be changed in order to increase appropriations to the university.

Jensen hopes students will come and listen to the speech.

“It’s a really great chance for students to hear a little bit more about what GSB does,” she said.
