Women’s golf achieves another season high

The ISU women’s golf team tied its season-best finish Tuesday, taking seventh place at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate.

The Cyclones were locked in a tie for fourth place heading into the final round of the 19-team event, but slipped three places despite having a pair of top-15 finishers.

Iowa State was again led by junior Karly Pinder, who took fifth place in the tournament with a score of 218. It was her highest finish ever and was 13 strokes better than her previous 54-hole best. Pinder has now finished in the top 10 of two consecutive tournaments.

Pinder, a native of Exeter, Ontario, attributed much of her recent success to practice.

“I feel really confident about my game and the team in general,” Pinder said. “Practice has been really productive, not only for me, but for everyone on the team.”

The Cyclones also got a solid performance out of freshman Pennapa Pulsawath. She finished in a tie for 15th place with a score of 225. She also had the lowest score on the team in the final round, shooting a 74.

Pulsawath, a Bangkok, Thailand, native, is admired by her teammates and coaches alike for her strong work ethic.

“Her work ethic and her passion for the game is really motivating for everyone else on the team,” Pinder said. “She always has a great attitude and it can really rub off on the other team members.”

Iowa State’s Jessica Shin and Christi Athas finished in ties for 54th and 58th, respectively. Shin ended with a 234, while Athas was only one stroke behind her with a 235. Kendra Hanson shot a 244 to round out the Cyclones scoring.

With three quarters of their fall season in the books, the golfers will focus their attention on preparing for the final tournament of the fall. One thing the golfers are working toward is improving their short game, which they believe is the key to taking the next step as a team.

“Hopefully we’re getting there,” said coach Christie Martens. “Our short game percentages have really improved. We’re not quite there, but we’re still working toward it.”

The Aloha Invitational takes place Nov. 22 to 24 in Kauai, Hawaii.
