WILLIAMS: Basketball snags another recruit

Greg McDermott and the ISU basketball coaching staff picked up their second commitment in the class of 2008, as Dominique Buckley, a 6-foot-2-inch, 190-pound point guard from Romulus Senior High School in Romulus, Mich., committed to Iowa State on Oct. 25.

Buckley is a true point guard who has great vision and can make an immediate impact when he gets to Iowa State. Buckley is a floor general, who led his Romulus team, coached by Nate Oats, to the Michigan state title game as only a freshman in high school.

“When I went down there I had a whole different impression on what I thought Iowa State was going to be. When I got there, it was totally different. It was a lot bigger and a lot more exciting. The people were nice,” Buckley said.

The future sees a great combination of Buckley, a pure point guard and 2007 commitment Diante Garrett, who can play all three guard positions effectively.

“I would think that they’ll play both of them together quite a bit. Illinois rode two point guards all the way to the Final Four and Diante, Iowa State said, is more of a combo-guard. Dominique is more of a true point who can run the team,” said Buckley’s high school coach Oats.

Buckley also joins Fremont, Neb., native and sharp shooter, Wes Eikmeier, as the second commitment in McDermott’s 2008 recruiting class.

Buckley chose Iowa State over interest from Xavier, Dayton, Illinois, Drake, Penn State, Miami and Florida State.

Now, I’ve got some good news and bad news for everyone. The good news is that the P’Allen Stinnett recruiting saga is finally over. The bad news is that Stinnett picked Creighton over Iowa State.

I’m not going to lie; I would have loved to see Stinnett end up in Ames. He’s an explosive player who reminds me a lot of Allen Iverson. Stinnett is a loose cannon, but he has that “it” factor that makes up for it.

But the more that I think about it, I feel like Stinnett going to Creighton is a bit of a blessing in disguise. Stinnett reminds me more of a Wayne Morgan-type basketball player. I’m sure he could have learned, but I’m not quite sure how he would have molded into the structured McDermott system.

The class of 2007 looks to be wrapped up, at least for now. The Cyclones won’t pick up any more commitments before the early signing period, but look for the coaches to target a guard in the late signing period.

As of now, the 2007 class consists of Craig Brackins, Diante Garrett and Lucca Staiger.
