From Jim Harbaugh to Jay Norvell, to the likes of Mike Ditka, speculation has been raging about who will become the new ISU football coach. There’s finally an answer – sort of.

The name of the new coach has not been released, but a press conference is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday at Hilton Coliseum to introduce the new coach, who is scheduled to speak. ISU Athletic Director Jamie Pollard and ISU President Gregory Geoffroy will also address the crowd.

In a letter e-mailed to students, Pollard and the ISU athletic department wrote, “We came to an agreement Sunday with our No. 1 choice from the first day of the search.”

Who that choice is remains to be seen. With speculation running rampant since Dan McCarney resigned on Nov. 11 after 12 years as head football coach, a smorgasbord of names have been dropped by experts and fans alike.

Athletic Department Communications Manager Tom Kroeschell had no comment regarding Iowa State’s next coach.

Many sources are reporting that current Central Michigan head coach Brian Kelly is the front-runner for the job. Kelly has also been linked to the job opening at Michigan State, but the Cleveland Plain Dealer and CBS 19 in Cleveland are reporting that Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Todd Grantham has accepted an offer to be Michigan State’s next head coach. The Browns and Michigan State, however, did not confirm the reports.

The letter possibly provides a clue, saying, “The purpose of this e-mail is to personally invite each and every one of you to Hilton Coliseum on Monday evening to usher in the future of ISU football and also welcome the new coach, his wife and their children into our Cyclone family.”

Kelly’s bio on Central Michigan’s athletics Web site states that Kelly is married with three children.

Other names recently linked to the job have included LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini, Tulsa head coach Steve Kragthorpe, University of San Diego head coach Jim Harbaugh and Nebraska offensive coordinator Jay Norvell.

The press conference is open to the public, with doors opening at 5:15 p.m. The ISU marching band is scheduled to perform before the introduction of the new coach.
