LETTER: Article misrepresented respectful religious debate
October 30, 2006
I would like to respond to Thursday’s article, “GSB debates funding for Jewish group.”
For the record, I never said Passover is an “all-you-can-eat meal,” I said it was a one-night event. The point of that argument was that it may be difficult to read a 100-plus page book during supper and perhaps a shorter version would suffice. Jeff Rothblum was insulted because of his personal experience in reading the entire Hagaddah during Passover and in my not understanding that fact.
Jason O’Leary’s comments were not meant as derogatory. He simply did not know that using the word “Jew” to describe a person who is Jewish could be derogatory in nature.
We had a very respectful debate and I do not believe this article did justice to the efforts that were made to keep this debate from being personal or insulting. The other 99 percent of the debate was productive, intelligent and polite; however, that was not properly expressed in the Daily article.
These are serious issues that require serious debate. I feel that we have set a very dangerous precedent in funding spiritual items. I also feel that because of a dirty political trick used by the speaker to disenfranchise our ability to vote on the issue in question, we did not vote on the issue but rather were forced to choose between zero-funding a deserving group and funding spiritual items along with clearly deserving items.
My viewpoint remains that the Government of the Student Body should not fund spiritual items for any group. Despite that, the bottom line is we did set the precedent and I would now like to see it challenged fairly and in a direct vote. I invite any religious group that would like spiritual items to be funded by GSB to come forth and request money. You can cite our decision as precedent and let us decide if we really feel we want to go down this road.
