Swimming and diving opens season 2-0
October 22, 2006
The ISU swimming and diving team put together two dominating victories in two very different dual meets this weekend, defeating South Dakota State University 190-95 on Friday night and the University of Nebraska-Omaha 274-188 on Saturday morning.
On Saturday, the Cyclones were led by senior Lauren Breunig, who finished with four victories and two second-place finishes, and freshman Tien Tran, who won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions.
Diving coach Jeff Warrick said he thought the divers did very well with the meets on back-to-back days.
“I’m happy where they are at right now,” Warrick said. “We have got more to go, but they did a pretty consistent job and that is what we are looking for right now.”
Breunig won the 50-meter freestyle, the 100 freestyle, the 200 freestyle, and was a part of the winning 400 medley relay team; she also placed second in the 500 freestyle and was a part of the second-place 200 medley relay team.
Swimming coach Duane Sorenson said he was happy with the way his team competed on Saturday.
“We kept fighting all the way through,” Sorenson said. “We had a lot of tired young ladies at the end.”
Senior Chelsey Walden won the 500 freestyle and sophomore Haley Haynes finished second to Tran in both diving competitions. Iowa State also won the 200 medley relay.
On Friday, the Cyclones won all but one event and were led by multiple victories by Tran in the diving events, Walden in the 500 and 1000 freestyle, sophomore Lindsay Wegner in the 100 and 200 backstroke, and sophomore Marni Benson in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.
Walden said the main thing the team worked on this week during training was race strategy.
“I was just trying to practice on how I am going to swim those races the rest of the year,” Walden said. “This was a really good opportunity to try different things and see what works best.”
Other Cyclones that were victorious on Friday were Breunig in the 200 freestyle, freshman Frances Calzada in the 50 freestyle, senior Cassandra Nelson in the 100 freestyle and junior Emily Welborn in the 100 butterfly. The Cyclones also won the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay.
Sorenson said he was also pleased with the team’s Friday performance.
“There was a couple of close races where we really dug down and finished hard,” Sorenson said. “Lindsay Wegner and Marni Benson both had real strong performances.”
The Cyclones have a weekend off before they travel to Macomb, Ill. to compete against Western Illinois and Illinois State on Nov. 3.
