Men’s golfers aim to continue winning streak
October 21, 2006
The ISU men’s golfers will take their hot streak on the road Monday when the team travels to Charlotte, N.C., to play in its final tournament of the fall season.
The Cyclones have won two straight tournaments dating back to the Wolfpack Classic on Oct 3. More recently, the team wrapped up a win against the other major golf programs in the state of Iowa at the Big Four Championship last week.
Iowa State recorded a total team score of 568 at the event, which took place in Cedar Rapids. Drake came in second place, tallying a 571. Iowa and Northern Iowa each shot scores of 574 to tie for third place.
The victory marks the first time the Cyclones have won the event since 2001.
“We feel every year that we are the best team in the state, and it feels good to finally win it,” said junior Joe Cermak. “The last few years we’ve had some struggles in it. It feels good knowing that we’re the best team in the state of Iowa.”
Although they’re used to playing tournaments in warmer weather, the Cyclones had to deal with some inclement conditions in Cedar Rapids. Temperatures were low, and it was windy and rainy during most of the event.
“That was one of the more gratifying things about the win; we really toughed it out in some adverse conditions,” said coach Jay Horton. “We didn’t start out real well, but we played the last nine holes really strong, where as the other teams faltered a little.”
With two straight wins under its belt, Iowa State will turn its attention to the 49er Collegiate Classic, which kicks off Monday. The recent success has not only given the team momentum, it has given it confidence as well.
“They’re not only learning how to win, they expect to win,” Horton said. “They’re looking forward to going down to Charlotte and trying to cap off the season with a three-peat.”
Three wins in a row is definitely not out of the question for a team Horton said is the best he’s seen is his time at Iowa State. The single-season record for scoring average at Iowa State is 72.8. At this point in the season, all five Cyclone starters are averaging below that mark.
“I may have had better players at a given time, guys that have maybe done more in their careers, but these guys aren’t done yet,” Horton said. “They may shatter all of the records that were ahead of them.”
