Cyclones ready to spike Aggies in Ames

After a heartbreaking loss to Texas Tech on Saturday, the ISU volleyball team will try to take out some aggression on another Texas school as Texas A&M comes to Ames.

Traditionally Iowa State has struggled against A&M, winning only one match ever against the Aggies, but this match is ripe for the taking.

A&M is currently 10th in the 11-team Big 12 conference and has struggled all season.

The Aggies come to Ames with a 9-8 overall record, but are only 2-7 in conference play.

The Cyclones currently sit sixth in the conference at 4-5, with an overall record of 12-7.

The Aggies aren’t without weapons though. Senior Christi Hahn is one of two players in the Big 12 who is hitting over .400 with a .407 hitting percentage, and Mary Batis ranks ninth in the conference with 3.74 kills per game.

The match against A&M is the last one before Iowa State starts cycling back through the conference, and through the first half of the season, there have been a number of memorable moments.

Senior Katie Jessen has moved into sixth place all-time for kills at Iowa State, breaking the 1,000 mark against Texas Tech.

Junior Erin Boeve was named Big 12 and national player of the week, the first time a Cyclone was ever bestowed the national honor.

The Cyclones beat Kansas State on the road for the first time in more than 10 years, and won at Colorado for the first time since 1987.

Transfer Lauren Cummings has been a pleasant surprise.

The Ankeny native came to Iowa State after playing at Northwest Missouri State and has taken over the right side hitter position. She is leading the Cyclones with a .344 hitting percentage, which is on pace to break the all-time school record of .319.

The game against Texas A&M begins at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hilton Coliseum.
