Veteran duo fuels Cyclone Hockey sweep

These guys are really starting to click.

Senior forward Jason Brown and junior forward Jayson Peterson propelled Cyclone Hockey to a sweep over the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies this weekend, winning 4-3 and 5-4 on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

The two forwards combined for five of Cyclone Hockey’s nine goals and also compiled four assists over the weekend.

That was significant because all four of their assists were to each other.

“It’s our third year playing together now, and the chemistry has always been there,” Brown said. “Jayson is always in position.”

Peterson added their friendship off the ice has helped them out along the way. “We’ve been playing together since my freshman year,” he said. “We are good friends and we click together. We can just find each other.”

The biggest goal of the weekend was Peterson’s game-winner Saturday night, midway through the third period. With the score tied going into the third, it was the only goal of the final period after both Cyclone Hockey and the Grizzlies had caught fire in the second period, scoring three goals apiece.

Oakland senior forward Will McMahon had three goals in the first two periods and forced Cyclone Hockey to change up its defensive focus for the final period.

“We needed to throw a body on No. 18 [McMahon] and play physical and keep him to the outside,” Peterson said.

The Cyclone Hockey defense did better late in the third period. It played two men down during a stretch in the final minutes but were able to hold on.

“That was the difference-maker in the game,” said coach Al Murdoch. “They had 30 shots in the third. That’s a lot of shots.”

Out of those 30 shots, 18 were on goal and six were blocked by defenders in front of the goal.

The anchor of the defense, Cyclone Hockey goalie Trent Baker, played a key role in the sweep logging all 120 minutes in net for Cyclone Hockey.

Next up for Cyclone Hockey is the University of Iowa. The two in-state rivals play at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Des Moines at 95KGGO Arena. On Saturday afternoon they head to Cedar Rapids to wrap up the series with a 3:30 p.m. face-off at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
