Family and friends of Shanda Munn lined up outside of a Story County courtroom to say goodbye.

Munn, former ISU student, was sentenced Friday morning after pleading guilty to a Class C felony count of vehicular homicide. She was charged for the hit-and-run accident on Dec. 2, 2005, that resulted in the death of ISU student Kelly Laughery.

Munn will serve no more than 10 years in prison, but the exact amount will be decided by the State Parole Department. She is also required to pay a fine of $150,000.

“‘I’m sorry’ is so inadequate,” Munn said to Laughery’s parents during her sentencing. “It is not right for me to stand here and ask for leniency. I’m so sorry.”

Laughery’s parents talked of their daughter’s life and the caring person she was.

More than 100 people attended the sentencing, many in tears.

“She was so giving of herself,” said Pamela Laughery, Kelly’s mother.

“She did more in her short 20 years of life than most do in a lifetime. We lost a caring, loving daughter, sister and friend. There is nothing you can say or do that will ease the pain.”
