Freshman goalie steps up in shutout of Northwestern

The ISU soccer team split a pair of games in the Big Ten-Big 12 Challenge last weekend, falling to Minnesota, 2-0, on Friday before shutting out Northwestern, 1-0, on Sunday for its first win of the season.

The Cyclones (1-3) were outshot by the Wildcats (1-2) on Sunday, 17-5, but an early goal by Leslie Hill and a strong defensive performance backed freshman goalie Ann Gleason’s first collegiate shutout.

“We did what we needed to do,” said coach Rebecca Hornbacher. “We were able to get a lot of players in and create some chances. [Northwestern] took a lot of shots, but we stayed organized and did what we needed to do to get the win.”

Hill scored in the 12th minute, taking a throw-in pass and beating a defender to set up her own shot. The goal gave the Cyclones an early lead that they kept despite Northwestern’s offensive onslaught.

Senior defender Kate Kirwan had one key stop late in the game on a Northwestern attack. Gleason blocked a shot that continued to trickle toward the net, but Kirwan stopped the ball before it crossed the line, saving the lead.

Gleason had eight saves in a win that was much needed for the freshman goalkeeper. She allowed 13 goals in the team’s first two games of the season. Gleason rebounded from her rough welcoming to the college level allowing two goals against Minnesota and none against Northwestern.

Iowa State outshot Minnesota 14-11, but couldn’t get on the board. The game was tied at halftime, but the Gophers (3-1) scored in the 63rd minute and again in the 78th minute to seal the game.

Hornbacher was pleased with the effort despite the loss.

“Overall, we played a complete game, but we need to cash in on scoring opportunities,” Hornbacher said. “We will be dangerous to deal with if we improve at the rate we are improving.”
