Incumbents re-elected
September 12, 2006
Both incumbents running for re-election on the Ames School Board were granted three more years Tuesday.
Unofficial election results released by the Story County Auditor’s Office reported that incumbent Gail Johnston received the second-most votes in Tuesday’s election, with 1,998, while Roy Cakerice, the other incumbent, finished third with 1,396 votes.
Anita Rollins received 2,092 votes, finishing ahead of the other five candidates vying for three-year terms.
Francis Todey, running unopposed, will serve a one-year term.
Ames residents also approved a measure that would allow the Ames Community School District to charge a $15 to $25 fee for textbooks for the first time since a 1934 referendum determined that the district would not charge for the use of books.
Johnston credited her work on the board the last three years as the key to her re-election.
“I think the voters thought I’d done a good job the previous years on the board,” she said. “It’s affirmation for the time and thought that goes into serving on the board, and I plan to continue in that vein.”
Rollins said she looks forward to serving on the board.
“It’s very exciting and very humbling,” Rollins said. “I’m excited for the opportunity to do something good for the community of Ames.”
Cakerice said he will continue to draw on his experience in the classroom to guide his decisions.
“Being a school teacher of 36 years, my main focus has always been kids,” Cakerice said.
Story County Auditor Mary Mosiman said the results will not be made official until Friday after provisional votes are counted.
