Hawkeye heartbreak

The ISU women’s soccer team outplayed Iowa for 90 minutes, all the way up until it lost the game.

With a goal in overtime, the Hawkeyes (3-2-1 overall) escaped Ames with a victory, stealing a game the Cyclones (3-4) left for the taking. The win broke a two-game Hawkeyes losing streak in the rivalry.

Iowa State outshot Iowa and controlled the possession for the majority of the match, but couldn’t finish. Four minutes, 13 seconds into overtime, the Hawkeyes caught the Cyclone defense with a quick attack, and Stephanie Hyink poked a through pass to Kelsie Full, who lofted a chip shot past goalie Ann Gleason.

“My stomach is just sick right now,” said coach Rebecca Hornbacher. “I felt like we had them in the second half, I felt like we were just at ’em. I think we were in their end most of the time.”

Only three minutes into the game, freshman forward Elise Reid couldn’t catch a well-placed cross that set her up with a wide-open net. That set the tone for the night, as the Cyclones continually failed to convert their offensive opportunities.

Iowa State took 15 shots total, eight on goal, three more than Iowa.

Shots sailed high, wide and right to Iowa goalie Lindsey Boldt, but never into the back of the net.

“Sometimes, you just have off-days,” Reid said. “We are trying. They’re just not coming.”

Hornbacher said she wasn’t pleased with the offensive performance.

“It doesn’t matter if you outshoot a team, or you have more corner kicks. What matters is the final score,” Hornbacher said.

“We have to finish our shots.”

Hornbacher thought the Cyclones would put it away in the second half.

“We talked about coming out faster and coming out stronger [in the second half] and trying to create opportunities . We had the run of play, and we didn’t get the ball in the back of the net, and they kept on fighting.”

The Hawkeyes didn’t threaten the Cyclones goal often, taking 12 shots. Both Iowa and Iowa State were playing in their third game in five days.

“We just need to put away some chances,” said junior Stephanie Kaphingst. “We didn’t put away our opportunities, and that’s eventually what cost us the game.”

Defender Kate Kirwan said the goal was scored too quickly for her to see what happened.

“All of the sudden it was in the back of the net,” she said.

“It’s just a matter of putting one away, and today Iowa was the first one to put one away.”

In the rivalry game, the team suffered its most bitter loss of the season.

“Of course, we’re feeling down, but losses are going to happen,” Reid said. “But you just have to come back and learn from them.”

Iowa State still leads the all-time series, 4-3-1. With the loss, Iowa State and Iowa are now tied in the Cy-Hawk series, 2-2.

The Cyclones hit the road again this weekend, playing two games in the Colorado College Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo.
