Kerry to speak on campus for Political Action Week
September 28, 2006
A U.S. senator will speak on campus Monday.
Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., will speak at 10:30 a.m. Monday on Central Campus to help kick off Political Action Week.
The Government of the Student Body is sponsoring the week of events.
Eric Lindstrom, GSB associate justice and senior in political science, said if there is bad weather the event will be moved to the Maintenance Shop of the Memorial Union.
“The event is open to all of the university community,” Lindstrom said.
One of the goals of the week is to stir up interaction among people and create a dialogue, Lindstrom said.
“We want to promote thought, dialogue and action,” he said.
“He [Kerry] loves that idea and he is completely behind that.”
There are events going on every day next week to promote civic thought and communication.
“This is not John Kerry week; it is a bi-partisan event,” Lindstrom said. “We are working as hard as we can to balance that.”
GSB is still in the process of getting more speakers to come throughout the week.
“We are still talking with a lot of big Republican names, as well,” Lindstrom said.
There are debates and guest speakers planned throughout the week who will discuss a large array of topics.
“We hope that by the end of the week people come away more informed,” said Sarah Sunderman, GSB director of student events, GSB aide and junior in marketing.
At 10 a.m. Monday, Kerry will speak at a press conference and meet and greet with secretary of state candidate Michael Mauro in Room 3512 of the Memorial Union.
This is separate from Political Action Week and is also open to the public.
