Women’s cross country places five in top 15
September 4, 2006
Led by first-place finisher freshman Kelsey Bulat, the ISU women’s cross country team placed all five of its runners in the top 15 at the Drake Fall Classic at Ewing Park in Des Moines.
Bulat finished the 4,000-meter course in a time of 14 minutes, 21 seconds.
Coach Dick Lee said he was happy with the performance, especially because the strategy was not to focus on the meet aspect of the race.

“It was a good, hard, training run for us,” Lee said. “Kelsey Bulat winning against some good regional competition was a nice surprise to start the season.”
The next Cyclone to break the tape was junior Dawn Caffrey, who placed sixth with a time of 15:11.
“Dawn ran a very solid race,” Lee said. “It was a good start to the season for her.”
After Caffrey, who was one of three ISU runners in the top 10, was sophomore Erin Penticoff, placing 10th, with a time of 15:40.
Rounding out the Cyclone contingent was junior Mackenzie Madison finishing 12th with a time of 15:57.
Freshman Kim Brown, who placed 15th with a time of 16:05.
“Erin and Kim ran decent races,” Lee said. “They felt much better in the first of the two loops, but it was a good start for those kids as well.”
The Cyclones will try to continue the momentum they gained at Drake into their only home meet, the ISU Open, at 10 a.m. Saturday at the ISU cross country course.
Lee said everyone who is healthy and ready to go will run Saturday.
“We will kind of set this as a measuring stick for who is in our top nine,” Lee said. “We will also have a few runners probably run unattached so we can keep their redshirt status.”
