The weekend started out well as the team quickly dispatched host UC Irvine 3-0. The Cyclones dominated the net, outblocking the Anteaters 13-3. Seniors Katie Jessen and Nicole Lorenzen paced the offensive attack, chipping in 10 kills each. Senior Katie Churm, playing in her hometown, led the Cyclone defense with 12 digs.

Both of the Cyclones opponents Saturday were nationally recognized programs with high quality talent.

Iowa State defeated the Michigan Wolverines in the first game, 30-23, but couldn’t close the deal, losing each of the final three games 30-28 to drop the match 3-1.

The road didn’t get any easier in the second match of the day, as the Cyclones took on the 20th-ranked San Diego Toreros.

Despite a record-setting day from junior Lauren Cummings, Iowa State fell in five games.

Cummings set a new career-high with 19 kills. Five came as the Cyclones held off a late rally for a 30-28 win in game one.

San Diego tied the match at 1-1 before the Cyclones reclaimed the lead following a 30-27 victory in game three.

The Toreros evened the match at 2-2 before capitalizing on an attack error by Iowa State in game five to win the match 3-2.

The Cyclones will try to get back on track at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hilton Coliseum against the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
