The Cyclones finished with 10 runners in the top 11 of the 4K race at Ewing Park in Des Moines.

Senior David Rotich from Eldoret, Kenya, finished in second place with a time of 12 minutes, 7 seconds. His time was only 1 second behind first-place runner Dorian Urley, freshman at Northern Iowa.

Rotich said he was impressed with how the team performed, especially because it was the first meet of the year.

“I think it went well. I think we put on a very impressive performance as a team,” Rotich said. “We were just going out there and getting our feet wet. I think, generally, everyone put in their best effort.”

Rotich also said he was surprised at the way a few of the runners raced in the 4K. Daniel Fadgen and Jayden Russ, who finished fourth and fifth, respectively, impressed Rotich with their races.

Russ, a junior transfer from Brisbane, Australia, finished with a time of 12:16, 6 seconds behind Fadgen’s 12:10.

Sophomore Kiel Uhl, running as an unattached runner to protect his redshirt capability, finished third with a time of 12:09.

Sophomore Kevin Born, sixth; sophomore Guor Marial, seventh; senior Dan Taylor, eighth; sophomore Brandon Rooney, ninth and junior Ricky Reusser, 10th, rounded out the top 10.

All the runners who finished in the top 10 were within 15 seconds of Rotich, which bodes well for the Cyclones future.

Coach Corey Ihmels was not available for comment.

The Cyclones are back in action when they host the ISU Open at 10 a.m Saturday.
