Iowa State has chosen the next dean of students.

Dione Somerville was officially named for the position Friday, which is currently held in interim by Mimi Benjamin, program coordinator in the office of the vice president for student affairs. According to the ISU News Service, Somerville will officially take the position sometime in January.

Somerville’s previous post was director of enrollment services and registrar at Lorain County Community College in Elyria, Ohio, since 2001.

ISU Vice President for Student Affairs Thomas Hill said in a press release that Somerville’s variety of experience make her an outstanding choice for dean of students.

“She has worked at four-year and two-year institutions, which positions her to work with a significant population of our students who arrive from community colleges,” Hill said.

In addition to her office at Lorain, Somerville served as director of student affairs and services at the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland and as director of student activities and assistant director of campus programming for Ursuline College in Ohio.

She received her bachelor’s degree from Ohio Northern University, her masters in college student personnel at Bowling Green State University and her doctorate in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania.
