A former ISU student pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide at her hearing on Friday as part of a plea bargain.

Shanda Munn, 21, was a junior in journalism and mass communication when she allegedly hit and killed ISU student Kelly Laughery on Dec. 2, 2005.

Munn spoke through tears as she related for the court record what happened that evening. She said she attended a party and, as a result of the alcohol she consumed, hit Laughery and drove away.

As a part of the bargain the state has recommended Munn serves a maximum of 10 years in jail and pay a fine of $150,000 in addition to court fees and surcharges.

Munn’s lawyer, Russ Schroeder, said Munn has accepted responsibility and is a good person who feels terrible about the events that led to Laughery’s death.

“I’ve talked to Shanda and if this is a learning experience for a lot of young people that drinking and driving don’t mix; then some good has come from this,” Schroeder said.

Schroeder said Munn consumed between six to eight drinks in a period of five hours the night of the hit-and-run accident.

Munn’s sentencing trial is scheduled to be at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 6.
