GSB Senate brainstorms in first session
August 23, 2006
The Government of the Student Body Senate addressed past weaknesses and discussed hopeful improvements in its session Wednesday night.
Wednesday’s meeting was the first held by the Senate this semester, and GSB President Emily Jensen, senior in political science, took the opportunity to lead an informal brainstorming session that addressed perceived problems with the GSB.
The senators unanimously decided that lack of communication with the student body was the biggest issue faced by the GSB this year.
Jensen said she agreed that it was a problem, and she intends to address it during her term.
She and Vice President Sara Faber, senior in community and regional planning in agriculture, used ISU students’ lack of knowledge about GSB as one of the platforms on which they ran for office.
Jenna Jones, GSB director of public relations and senior in management, presented an event designed to help deal with the problem.
She has started to organize a GSB tailgate party during the ISU-Nebraska football game Oct. 7.
“It’ll be a fun event and a great way to reach out to students and let them know that GSB is cool,” Jones said.
She said many students do not know what GSB can do for them, but if they did, they would probably want to be more involved.
“These meetings can be kind of intimidating if you don’t know anything about GSB,” Jones said.
The tailgate will be designed to increase awareness of GSB in a more casual environment.
Only one student who was not involved in GSB attended the meeting. Takiyah Abdulmalik, junior in food science, said she attended the meeting because of personal interest.
She said she was very surprised that she was the only student to do so.
“It’s actually fun,” Abdulmalik said. “I would suggest other students come to see what GSB is all about.”
The meetings are open to the public, and all students are invited to attend. During each session, the Senate holds an open forum during which students may discuss any topics that they feel are important.
Meetings take place at 7 p.m. each Wednesday in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union.
