Sally Elbert has joined Jami Larson and Erwin Klaas in the race for the City Council’s 2nd Ward seat Tuesday as the third and final candidate.

Elbert is a resident of the 2nd Ward, which is north of Iowa State and includes Frederiksen Court and Schilletter Village. She is also the owner of Ville Day Spa, 2610 Northridge Parkway suite 101, which is in the 2nd Ward.

Elbert’s nomination petition was delivered on the final day of candidate registration.

She said the reason she waited to join the race was that she wanted to talk to people before jumping in, and that she received a good response from those she talked to.

“I want to create excitement and get the voters out there,” Elbert said.

Elbert declined comment on the proposed new mall. However, she did say she felt that too much time and energy was put into the effort, which may have taken focus away from other projects affecting Ames.

“I would like to build the unity between Iowa State and the city,” Elbert said.

She said she has employed ISU students in her business, and believes the university is a strong resource for the city.

The seat for the 2nd Ward is currently being held by Mike Hamilton. Hamilton was appointed to the position after Steve Goodhue left the council to accept a job in Des Moines.

The election will be decided Nov. 7 in the general election.
