Cyclones lead in competition

After dominating the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk series last season, that ISU athletic department started off on the right foot once again.

The ISU volleyball team found themselves down two games to none at intermission of Saturday evening’s game against intrastate rival the University of Iowa, but they came back and triumphed in three consecutive games to overtake the Hawkeyes (28-30, 26-30, 30-25, 30-22, 15-5) and take a 1-0 lead in the series. The win propelled Iowa State to 3-0 to open the season.

Senior Katie Jessen was named tournament MVP for her 25 kills and nine digs. Junior Erin Boeve and senior Jessica Klein each added 16 kills.

Boeve and senior Katie Churm were also name to the all-tournament team.

Freshman setter Kaylee Manns opened her career in a monumental way with 70 assists and 23 digs. The 70 assists were good for the sixth best single match total in ISU history.

The Cyclones win against Iowa put the finishing touches on a clean sweep for ISU volleyball this weekend at the Hawkeye Challenge in Iowa City. The Cyclones dismantled their competition to win the tournament.

In its season opener against Chicago State on Friday night, Iowa State ran rampant from the start, opening up with a 17-3 lead in the first game and taking the match after three straight games.

The Cyclones also soundly defeated the Drake Bulldogs in three games (30-11, 30-22, 30-16) on Saturday afternoon.

Northern Iowa will be the last intrastate rival the Cyclones will face. That match will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hilton Coliseum.
