A suspect in a Missouri murder investigation was apprehended Tuesday night in Ames.

Pantaleon S. Salinas, 68, of Cedar Rapids, was arrested without incident around 6 p.m. Tuesday at 1517 Idaho St.

Ames Police Sgt. Rory Echer said Ames authorities were alerted by Missouri State Police to look for the suspect at the address. Officers then observed a vehicle owned by Salinas at the property.

Shortly thereafter, Echer said a male who matched Salinas’ description was observed outside the home.

His identity was finally confirmed by an unidentified woman who left the residence and was questioned by Ames Police officers.

Officers then approached the home and arrested Salinas without incident.

Salinas is a suspect in the murder of his long-time girlfriend Renee Zeman, 63, whose body was discovered Sunday in Rolla, Mo., with knife wounds to the neck.

The Phelps County Missouri Police Department has issued a first-degree murder warrant for Salinas. Missouri State Police investigators were on their way to Ames to begin the extradition process at time of print.

Echer was not able to comment on why Missouri authorities suspected Salinas might be in Ames.

Missouri currently exercises the death penalty, which – if convicted – Salinas will face.
