Rebounding from a loss is always hard. Rebounding from a game when you lose 9-0 is even harder.
The ISU soccer team opened the season against fifth-ranked Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., on Saturday. The Fighting Irish, the former national champions, quickly made their presence known when Notre Dame’s Kerri Hanks scored just 1:19 into the first half giving her team a lead they would never surrender.
Her goal set the tone for a first half that saw Notre Dame score six goals on 18 shots. The Fighting Irish scored on four of its first six chances. The Cyclones offense managed only one shot in the first half.
ISU freshman keeper Ann Gleason was rudely welcomed to the college level, as she allowed nine goals in the game. Despite the initial feeling to point the finger solely at Gleason, the defense must also be held accountable. Gleason was under constant fire as Notre Dame managed to take 26 shots in the game.
Gleason saved six of the 15 shots on target.
As a whole, the ISU offense only managed four shots in the entire game. Of those four shots, only two were on target.
The Cyclones will have to rebound quickly as they face Drake at 7 p.m. Monday in the ISU Soccer Complex. Coach Rebecca Hornbacher said the loss was a “learning experience,” and said the team will attempt to move forward as they look ahead to their game against Drake.
The Cyclones drop their record to 0-1 while Notre Dame improves to 1-0 on the season.
