The numbers speak for themselves:

Six – the Cyclone’s final finish at the NCAA National Women’s Gymnastics Championships, the highest finish ever for Iowa State.

Twenty-three – a school record for number of season wins.

Three – the number of Cyclones who earned Big 12 champion honors in three events.

And 3,141 – the attendance at Hilton Coliseum for the NCAA North Central Regional Championship, which is the largest crowd to ever watch an ISU gymnastics meet.

“We’re extremely proud of how we did,” said sophomore Jade Kvach.

“We stuck together the whole season and accomplished more than any team before us.”

Iowa State (23-10) finished the season nationally ranked in the top 10 in every event, an accomplishment only a handful of the nation’s teams can claim.

Among the most important achievements of the season for the Cyclones was qualifying for their first trip ever to the NCAA National Collegiate Women’s Gymnastics Super Six finals.

The Super Six – gymnastics’ equivalent to basketball’s Final Four – pits the nation’s top six teams against each other to determine the national champion.

“Our goal was to reach the NCAA Championships two years in a row, and we did that, and reaching the Super Six was icing on the cake,” said coach K.J. Kindler.

The Super Six finals will be broadcast via tape delay noon Saturday on CBS.

Iowa State also dominated the Big 12 Conference during the course of the season. The Cyclones finished the season undefeated in Big 12 dual meets, and junior Janet Anson was named Big 12 Gymnast of the Year, with Coach of the Year honors going to Kindler.

Other important wins included defeating Iowa to win the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk series for the ISU athletic department, and being the first team in 13 years to beat Nebraska in Lincoln.

“Winning Big 12s in Nebraska was a huge accomplishment for us, as well as making the Super Six for the first time ever,” Kvach said. “Both are major accomplishments for the program.”

Kindler said she is proud that her team accomplished its goals this season, and she is looking for even more success in the future.

“I’m super proud that the team was able to make the Super Six,” she said.

“Our goal now as a program is to get there more consistently.”

Next season the Cyclones lose five seniors but gain a number of talented freshmen. Kvach is excited to see what the newcomers bring to the team.

“The incoming freshmen will definitely have to make an impact,” Kvach said.

“All of them have had a good season this year, and we’re really excited to have them on our team.”
